Don’t know how to play MKV file, tell me?

I am really excited to watch the movie I downloaded today but I don’t know how and where to open it as its extension is MKV I am not familiar with this format as never used it till date. I tried to play it in media player classic but it says “unable to open file”, is My Mac the reason for this problem or probably some error in downloaded movie, what’s going wrong?

dick11 		Me too don’t know what is actually going on, seems the case of incompatibility of files formats. So if you are really willing to see those movies, you will first have to convert it to format that your player recognizes using pavtube Mkv converter for Mac which I did for playing Mkv videos. This way MKV video can be played on media players.
